The Story of Randy -From Airport Porter to CEO

There is much more to Randy Butler than meets the eyes –and his life story is an inspiration to all of us who are proud to be called Bahamian.

Born on September 10, 1967 in the quaint settlement of Nicholl’s Town, North Andros to a single mother, Captain Butler was destined to reach for the sky.

As a young boy, he would literally stand in fascination watching planes fly over his native town and knew that somewhere, somehow he would take his place among the high flyers.

Having never formally completed High School, Butler would steal away to work for tips and get closer to planes as an airport porter.

Thirty years later, he stands undisputedly as one of the most recognized and respected names in the field of aviation; having amassed over 27 years of industry experience backed by many important certifications and recognitions. He holds United States of America, Canadian and Bahamas Airline Transport Pilot Licenses (ATP) with type-ratings on Boeing 737 Jet, Dash 8, Cessna Citation Jet, Beechcraft 1900, SAAB 340 and seaplane aircraft. He has logged more than 6,000 flight hours as a corporate, commercial and charter pilot.

He has completed international training and obtained various certifications in Aviation Security, Civil Aviation Management, Airport Certification & Management, Airline Security, Airline Operations & Management and Safety Management systems (SMS) among others. As an FAA-certified Pilot Instructor and Examiner, Butler, in 1996, became the first Bahamian practicing in the Bahamas to
be designated by the Civil Aviation Authority (UK) as a Pilot Examiner.

In 2000, when The Bahamas was downgraded to Category Two by the International Aviation Safety Assessments (IASA) Program, Butler was a “part of the team that was successful in the recertification
process “and the Bahamas attained FAA IASA’s Category One status in less than a year.

He also served as Manager of Public Safety for The Nassau Development Company (NAD), with responsibility for the day-to-day safety of all users of the Lynden Pindling International Airport, and was further engaged with the Bahamas Government at the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation, as the first-ever manager of Aviation Security for the Bahamas.

In 2008, The Board of Directors of SkyBahamas, announced Captain Butler’s appointment as CEO and President of SkyBahamas; with responsibility for the company’s day-to-day management. Under his visionary leadership, the airline has expanded operations from three to over fifteen approved domestic and international routes, grew staff by over 200%, expanded the airline fleet to six aircrafts, and has given back over two million dollars through community initiatives, donations and assistance with the
development of our youth.

Butler was the recipient of the 2010 Bahamas Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur of the Year, 2011 Grand Bahama Christian Council Visionary Leadership Award and his company received the 2010
National Cacique Award for Transportation among others.

He leads the way among Andros businessmen through investing in significant projects; including his “boutique “resort development in his home of North Andros. In 2012, he again made history by being
offered as the first candidate for the DNA in the North Andros Constituency.

A devout Christian, he considers his proudest accomplishments as being married to Larona, and being the father of his three sons; Darcy, Randy Jr and baby Joshua and one daughter Hanna-Rachel.

Defined by his faith, family and flying ... Captain Butler and SkyBahamas are proud to be Bahamian.
